Tanners
Family-owned Tanners was established in 1842 and is one of the UK’s top independent wine merchants.
Although perhaps best known for its superb choice of French wines, from famous châteaux through to bottles for every day drinking, Tanners has a huge range from across the wine producing world as well as many curios.
The buying team at Tanners seeks out wines that are typical of their region or grape variety with fruit, richness, acidity, tannins and wood (if there is any), in perfect balance. Many of the wines are from family-owned concerns; as owner and managing director, James Tanner, points out, "they often possess that rare passion for their land, their vines and their winemaking so produce considerably better wines."

Private Cellar
Private Cellar was founded in 2005 by Andrew Gordon, Nicola Arcedeckne-Butler MW and Laura Taylor, who built their respective careers at Corney & Barrow. Since then, the team has expanded to six, including former colleague James Naylor, Jessica Wilding and, since January 2008, Amanda Skinner, formerly of John Armit Wines and Lay & Wheeler. Together the team has more than 80 combined years of experience in and passion for seeking out and selling wines which are truly outstanding in their category. Amanda and Laura have also worked closely with Simon Hoggart - and Bron Waugh before him - for more than a decade, contributing to the Spectator Wine Club and becoming well-versed in what the discerning Spectator reader likes to drink.
The Private Cellar experience is all about a focus on quality and value for money, offering a genuinely personal and bespoke service. Every wine must pass Nicola’s Master of Wine quality assessment and the annual wine list has gone from strength to strength, taking in agencies from all over France, Spain, Italy, California, South Africa, South America and Australia. The team is proud to source its wines direct from the growers, and, by direct sourcing, is able to offer excellent value.
There is no call centre at Private Cellar - all callers speak directly with an expert and, in addition to everyday drinking wines, the company can offer cellar planning or rationalisation, advice on the use of wine as an investment, storage and drinking advice and many other services.
At Private Cellar you can always be sure of a warm welcome and friendly advice, backed by years of experience, for all aspects of your wine buying.
Yapp Brothers
For over a third of a century, Yapp Brothers Wine Merchants has built a considerable reputation as an importer of high quality, grower wines from small domaines. The company is widely recognised as the UK’s leading specialist in wines from the Rhône, Loire and Provence, and its’ agencies include well-established domaines such as Jean-Louis Chave, Georges Vernay, Patrick Jasmin, Auguste Clape, Alain Graillot, Le Vieux Donjon, Trévallon and Jasper Hill.
Founded as a Rhône and Loire specialist in 1969 by then full-time dentist, Robin Yapp, Yapp Brothers is now run by his son, Jason and step-son, Tom. Although the company has since broadened its range to include wines from the Alsace, Provence, Champagne, the Savoie, Roussillon, the Midi, Corsica and Australia, the Yapp ethos of sourcing the finest examples a region has to offer, remains unchanged.
Yapp Brothers is widely known as an efficient mail order company, but the company also supplies many of the best restaurants in the UK as well as supporting a lively retail shop at the Old Brewery in Mere, Wiltshire, where customers can elicit the advice of a friendly and knowledgeable team.
Corney & Barrow
Established in 1780 in the City of London, Corney & Barrow has gone from shop premises on Old Broad Street, to its position as a nationwide distributor with an enviable range of wines from all over the world. It remains, however, a resolutely independent company with a young and dynamic team dedicated to providing a bespoke service for every customer.
Corney & Barrow is proud to be exclusive agents for Pétrus and other wines belonging to the Moueix family, for the incomparable Burgundy wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Leflaive, Domaine Bonneau du Martray and Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé and the extraordinary Champagne Salon, perhaps the finest and certainly the most coveted champagne in the world.
Corney & Barrow is the only wine company to have held three Royal Warrants as suppliers to HM Queen Elizabeth II, The Late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and HRH The Prince of Wales.
A more recent development in its long history has been the Corney & Barrow Wine Bar chain, operating twelve bars in the Square Mile and in Canary Wharf, all offering a huge range of wines by the glass, paired with quality bar food.
Now trading from an old HM Customs building near St Katharine Docks in the City, Corney & Barrow is constantly looking at ways to improve the business to the advantage of its customers on whom it relies for its future prosperity.
FromVineyardsDirect.com
FromVineyardsDirect.com is an online and direct mail only wine merchant that was started at the end of 2006 by David Campbell, the publisher behind the revived Everyman’s Library and Le Guide Hachette des Vins, France’s no 1 wine guide, and Esme Johnstone, the founder of Majestic Wine and former proprietor of Chateau de Sours.
It offers a deliberately limited range of high quality, very affordable wines from some of Europe’s best vineyards, delivered directly to the customer’s door at the click of a mouse.
By restricting its list ( under 60 wines), FromVineyardsDirect.com are able to maintain the highest quality standards on all their wines. They do not sell £4-5 plonk, nor the most expensive classed growths, categories which are already very well marketed in the UK. Its wines range from £6.65 to £24.95, with the majority in the middle of this price range and they place great emphasis on sourcing them from ‘upcoming’ regions and emerging winemakers so as to ensure the greatest possible value for money for customers.
