Listen: Peter Kyle’s GB Energy blunder

Uh oh. It’s the first day of Labour’s official GB Energy launch and things haven’t quite got off to a flying start. Sir Keir Starmer is in Scotland this morning to announce plans (including an all-new the website and logo) for his brand new publicly-owned Great British energy company. It’s the third of Labour’s ‘first steps’ to turning the country around — but it seems as though the proposal isn’t quite catchy enough for some of his own party members to memorise…

Speaking on LBC this morning, now former Labour MP for Hove Peter Kyle floundered over the website name when quizzed by Nick Ferrari. Kyle claimed that the £8 billion proposal was ‘all costed and all paid for’ and would ‘use money wisely to unlock private investment’. He could not quite, however, remember how to direct listeners to the new venture. First giving the website ‘greatbritishenergy.org.uk’, the Shadow Science Secretary was pulled up at the end of his interview by Ferrari and a rather excruciating exchange ensued…

NF: I’m being contacted by a considerable number of listeners. They’ve tried to type in greatbritishenergy.org.uk. The website doesn’t exist.

PK: Ah.

NF: I’ve asked one of my team. She’s typed it in. It doesn’t exist. Are you pushing something that doesn’t exist, Mr Kyle?

PK: Yeah, I’m so sorry. That is the website that I have… Let me just double check right in front of your eyes… Ah, okay: it’s great-british-energy.org.uk.

Oh dear. And on Good Morning Britain, Kyle made a similar blunder, telling viewers the website link was ‘gbenergy.org.uk’. How does Starmer expect his plan to catch on when his own politicians can’t even get it right?
