Watch: David Aaronovitch makes an utter fool of himself on Newsnight

I thought you’d like to see this, in case you haven’t already. This is David Aaronovitch being made to look like an utter fool on Newsnight because he doesn’t know what he is talking about. He doesn’t get Brexit, or Trump, or the Chatham House survey which I reported on a couple of days ago. He is in a state of denial – a familiar state for David, because however good a writer he may be, he has the analytical capacities of a wardrobe. And not a very good wardrobe, either. A DFS thing, I would reckon. Wrong about the Iraq War, wrong about Islam (until he conveniently changed his tune) and magnificently wrong now. He suggests populism in Europe is being talked up wrongly, because all the people who believe in this new populism are somehow doomed – either by death, because they are old, or because their industries will soon cease to exist. It is arguably the most genuinely stupid contribution to the debate I have ever witnessed, eclipsing even the stuff you hear when Corbyn takes to the studio. My wife, watching this car-crash, asked: is he really so thick as to believe this, or is he just saying it because he is terrified and has nothing else to say? Well, your call on that one. Let my missus know what you think, please. Incidentally, the debate was between four people who hate the new populism, natch. There was no alternative voice. Here’s the link.
