“I beg you, LEAVE” is written on the tape covering this man’s mouth. The backgrounds of the photographers whose work is in Messages from Tahrir reveal how diverse the protesters were. The young woman who took this powerful image works in IT support in a company. She saved up for a professional camera and taught herself photography on the internet.

This man used the sole of his shoe mounted on a broomstick to get his message across. This image was taken by a well-known activist and blogger, who uses the moniker Arabawy.

Karima Khalil will speaking about Messages from Tahrir (AUC Press, £16.95) at the Notting Hill Tabernacle on November 21st and Leighton House on November 22nd. This is the first of three blog posts on the book and its photographs
