Messages from Tahrir Square, part 2

Here is the second installment of Karima Khalil’s photo-history of the recent Egyptian revolution, Messages from Tahrir. You can find the first post here.

Protesters wrote their messages on whatever they could find, many using on their own bodies to convey their frustration, like this determined young man.

This moving image was taken by 18 year-old Mariam Soliman, who was in her final year of school when she took this picture.

“I beg you, LEAVE” is written on the tape covering this man’s mouth. The backgrounds of the photographers whose work is in Messages from Tahrir reveal how diverse the protesters were. The young woman who took this powerful image works in IT support in a company. She saved up for a professional camera and taught herself photography on the internet.

This man used the sole of his shoe mounted on a broomstick to get his message across. This image was taken by a well-known activist and blogger, who uses the moniker Arabawy.
