Is David Cameron’s greatest threat sitting inside his own party? In this week’s cover feature, James Forsyth examines the radical new mood that is taking shape among some of the 2010 intake of Tory MPs. On our View from 22 podcast this week, Liz Truss MP, a member of the ‘Free Enterprise’ group, gave us a flavour of her views on how the government should be improving the economy
‘When we joined Parliament, we’d already seen the financial crisis from the outside. We were questioning the basis on Europe and the US was being run — increasing debts at the expense of a productive and competitive economy. What we wanted to do with the Free Enterprise group is to say to people in Britain, we need enterprise to get the economy going. Making a profit is a good thing.
Another of the rising stars — Kwasi Kwarteng MP — provided an insight on what the the old Tory guard feel about the movement:
‘I think they are very open to it. I think they’ve been surprised on the relative lack of performance in terms of growth as everyone else. I think they really want new ideas and I think they are open to ideas in a way the leadership of Brown and Blair were not. It is an opportunity for ideas.’
James Forsyth analyses the situation in Greece, where the EU looks set to continue kicking the can down the road. And Fraser discuses Rod Liddle’s take Lord Leveson’s huff over criticism of his inquiry. You can listen below with the embedded player or subscribe through iTunes.
