DeSantis’s presidential launch flops on Twitter

Talk about a power failure. Ron DeSantis finally unveiled his long-awaited 2024 bid to become president last night in a glitch-riddled Twitter announcement plagued by technical difficulties. The Florida Governor filed a declaration of candidacy with the US federal electoral commission on Wednesday and then announced his move in an online chat with Twitter head honcho Elon Musk.

But the audio stream crashed repeatedly, making it almost impossible for most of the followers to hear DeSantis speak most of the time. The event got off to a rocky start after technical issues meant there were minutes of silence, with those who endured being subsequently kicked off the feed, subject to microphone feedback, hold music and other issues. Musk blamed the popularity of the event and ‘straining’ servers, claiming that: ‘You can tell by the mistakes that it’s real.’

Those that could hear the 44-year-old Republican were told that ‘American decline is not inevitable – it is a choice. And we should choose a new direction – a path that will lead to American revitalisation.’ Shall we start with the Wi-Fi Ronnie?

Naturally such failings were manna from heaven for Donald Trump, the man who looms like a Zeppelin over the Republican field. He blasted the launch on his Truth Social media platform, writing: ‘Wow. The DeSanctus TWITTER launch is a DISASTER! His whole campaign will be a disaster. WATCH!’ Pity his poor caps lock by the time the campaign is done…

And it wasn’t just Trump who was keen to stick the boot in. Mark Harris, lead strategist for Nikki Haley’s campaign, told the press: ‘Failed soft launch? Check. Failed announcement? Double check. We look forward to Ron DeSantis’s failed campaign.’ Ouch.
