Twelve people have been killed in a shooting at US Naval Sea Systems Command’s HQ in Washington DC by a gunman later shot dead by police. The below charts events as they unfolded yesterday. It began at 8.20am EST in Building 197 of the Washington Navy Yard complex, which is home to 3,000 workers. Latest developments:-

7.10pm “It appears that we have at least 12 fatalities… no known motive at this stage” says Vincent Gray, Mayor of DC. 6.22pm Accounts from those who saw and heard the shooting are now coming out. This from Patricia Ward, a logistics management specialist:-
“It was three gunshots straight in a row — pop, pop, pop. Three seconds later, it was pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, so it was like about a total of seven gunshots, and we just started running”
5:45pm: Barack Obama has just made a statement on the shooting, in which he confirmed that ‘several people have been shot, and some have been killed’.
These people are patriots, he said, who ‘know the dangers of serving abroad. But today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home’.
