Black attacks Forbes in SNP civil war latest

To Scotland, where the SNP infighting continues. After dozens of nationalist MPs were ditched this month by the electorate, some are already channelling their disappointment at MSP colleagues. It transpires that ex-MP Mhairi Black – who herself announced she was stepping down at this election due to Westminster’s ‘toxic’ culture – has taken aim at Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes and her religious beliefs, describing them as ‘archaic’ and ‘extreme’. Charming…

In an interview with Scotland’s Sunday Post newspaper ahead of her Edinburgh Fringe show ‘Politics Isn’t For Me’, Black – who was former deputy leader of the Westminster group – claimed that Free Church member Forbes’ views on equal marriage were ‘out of step with what the SNP has stood for’, adding:

We all remember Kate Forbes’ interview where she said she wouldn’t have supported gay marriage and doesn’t think people should have kids out of wedlock. Basically really archaic and, in my opinion, quite extreme views… If you start endorsing the sort of views Kate Forbes was saying, voluntarily, on camera, then that’s a massive red flag to so many people – particularly young people.

It’s curious Black talks of red flags for young people, not least because she was hardly a model MP herself. The SNP’s laziest MP could cast her mind back to 2020, perhaps, when she accompanied a drag queen called, er, ‘FlowJob’ to a primary school for ‘drag queen story hour’. Yet when there was an outcry from parents after sexually explicit images were found on ‘FlowJob’s’ social media accounts, Black defended her decision before accusing critics of ‘homophobia’. Good heavens…

And that’s not all. The former Member of Parliament is a regular rule-breaker. In 2022, she flouted her own party’s drinking restrictions by shamelessly swilling Tennent’s lager in full view of her train carriage. Two years earlier, Black caused controversy when she broke records by, er, being the first MP to use the ‘c-word’ in a parliamentary speech. Not that the rest of the language she employed in the Commons was much cleaner

All that said, Mr S considers it rather strange that Black thinks she can slam Forbes’s religious views – or advise what’s appropriate for young people. It’s taking SNP hypocrisy to a whole new level…
