Claws out, it’s all kicking off in Downing Street. After a month of drastic change and bubbling tensions among Westminster’s big beasts, things have started to turn violent. However, rather than May vs Osborne, it’s the government’s two top cats who can’t seem to keep a lid on it.
When David Cameron moved out of No.10, he left Larry the cat behind –insisting that he still loved him. In the MP for Witney’s absence, Downing Street’s resident mouser has struggled to cope. While little is yet known of his relationship with the new Prime Minister it’s Palmerston — the Foreign Office cat — who appears to be the cause of friction.
The pair have been spied hissing at one another on Downing Street, leading to suspicions that the duo are in the midst of a turf war. Now that war appears to have taken its first casualty. Larry has had to see a vet after he developed a limp thanks to an injury in his right front paw.
While No.10 refuse to confirm or deny whether Palmerston played a role in Larry’s injury, the Foreign Office cat is certainly making the most of his absence. With Larry on bed rest, Palmerston has taken pole position in Downing Street today. ‘It’s a land grab,’ Mr S’s feline expert reports. ‘To do this when Larry is not even here to defend himself is below the belt.’

At this rate, Mr S suspects that Cameron may need to consider breaking protocol and finding a space for Larry in his new home — that is, if he is telling the truth about his love for his one-time pet.
