During the EU referendum campaign, Eddie Izzard toured the country wearing a pink beret in a bid to convince young people to vote Remain. Alas his efforts failed to have the desired effect, with the Leave result only adding to his growing list of doomed campaigns.
While Izzard’s kiss of death has since gone on to lose him another election — failing to win a place on Labour’s NEC last month — he appears not to be put off. This weekend the cross-dressing comedian turned activist took part in the March for Europe where die hard Remain-ers — seemingly unswayed by the referendum result — took to the streets to call for the triggering of Article 50 to be delayed indefinitely.
Yet despite the abundance of EU flags and placards on show, it was Izzard’s pink headwear that stole the show. During the protest, a man grabbed the hat from Izzard’s head and made a run for it — leaving the comedian shouting ‘give me that back’. After a short chase by the police, the man was caught and placed in custody. However, it’s thought Izzard has had to part ways with the hat once again now the police have had to take the beret in as evidence ahead of the suspect’s trial.
While Izzard no doubt wants his hat back, Mr S suspects that a break from the beret may be for the best. After all, it’s hardly brought him much luck so far.
