Ex-Tory MPs denied special treatment for 2029 election

The 2024 election was something of a disaster for the Tories. Two in every three MPs departed the Commons last July, with many cut down while only in their thirties and forties. Consequently, a disproportionate number are keen to return to parliament next time. But, it seems that their hopes have been dashed, according to an email which has gone out this evening from the CCHQ candidates’ team to those who are on the list…

It begins thus: ‘As a former Member of Parliament, the Party thanks you for all your hard work and public service during your time in Parliament.’ It goes on to detail the hoops necessary to jump through for a seat next time. But then comes the kicker: ‘We appreciate you have considerable experience as a former MP, but you will understand that it is essential that we treat all applicants the same, so all applicants will have to complete our full assessment process to be eligible for approval. You may not be aware that this process has changed significantly in recent years.’ Ouch…

Already, Mr S is picking up unhappy chatty from ex-MPs who feel like their public records speak for themselves. One called it ‘another bad decision’ grumbling: ‘We’ve been MPs – they can form a judgement on whether they think we’ve been a good one or not. Ridiculous getting us to do the full process. Suspect it will push more former MPs towards the exit door.’

Over to you, Reform HQ…
