Although Gavin Williamson has managed to get through the week without telling any world leader to ‘go away and shut up’, he’s also had to deal with a new leadership rival entering the scene in the form of Amber Rudd’s successor Sajid Javid.
Not one to be outdone, Williamson has made sure to have a rather packed schedule himself. On Monday, the Defence Secretary told hacks at the Irish Embassy that the Prime Minister had told him to be ‘more diplomatic in your language, in your tone’ following his Russia comments:
‘Gavin, it’s all well and good being a direct-speaking Yorkshireman but as Defence Secretary you have Being Defence Secretary is about carefully and thoughtfully choosing words.’
And what diplomatic language ought he use? Mr S was given a taste of it at last night’s Institute of Economic Affairs event in the Churchill War Rooms. The ambitious Defence Secretary launched into a lengthly speech about Churchill, Brexit and the pros of intervention.
‘Brexit is an opportunity to expand our role in the world – now is not the time to be timid or to go into retreat. It’s time to take advantage of the talent and aspirations of the British people.
When it come to global Britain, who better to draw inspiration from from Churchill himself – and three of his great qualities.
Williamson went on to talk about innovation, bravery and robustness.
Could Williamson have the great qualities to lead his party success? It didn’t go unnoticed that some of his friends from the DUP (a group any new Tory leader in this Parliament would have to rely on) were in the room last night.
