When did Sir Paul McCartney become so shifty? The ‘National Treasure’ has been on Sky News promoting his latest album. There were more than a few awkward, if not downright embarrassing, moments.

Take when he was talking about young talent today. ‘I think these bands are great. I like One Direction,’ the former Beatle said. ‘They’re young beautiful boys and that’s the big attraction, but they can sing and they make good records.’

Leaning in, he added: ‘so that’s what I would see in common [with the Beatles], you know, that girls love them and you can fantasise that you’re going to marry them…or whatever.’ Macca’s trademark cheeky look worked when he was a young man. But in a 71 year old? Not so much.

He wasn’t done, either. Asked about rebel without a cause Miley Cyrus and her infamous ‘twerking’, Macca rode to the starlet’s defence: ‘You know what, I don’t think it was explicit at all. You couldn’t see anything.’ There was some breathy giggling in the background, and then he added, with an uneasy smile and flutter of his drooping eyelids: ‘You know I, I watched it… just as experiment to check…obviously you look at it and you go what’s everyone shouting about.’

At this point, Mr S was reaching for the remote, but still Macca went on. ‘This is a young girl, she’s like only twenty or something.’ You said it boss, Mr S thought to himself.

‘She’s dancing with Robin Thicke at the awards… I mean so what. Come on. We’ve seen worse than that,’ McCartney concluded, to awkward laughter from the interviewer.

I suppose that we should be grateful: at least McCartney was not ruining a moment of national celebration with another strained round of ‘Hey Jude’. That was very 2012.
