Labour’s new donor: #ToriesForCorbyn

Oh dear. According to a recent poll Jeremy Corbyn could win the Labour leadership. This news has brought joy to left-wing activists and Tories alike, though granted this is for two very different reasons. A lot of the swing towards Corbyn has been attributed to the #ToriesForCorbyn campaign, which has seen Conservatives sign up as supporters of the Labour party in an attempt to sabotage the party’s leadership election.

With more than two thirds of Labour’s new recruits reportedly supporting Corbyn, the Telegraph have tried to boost the leader hopeful’s chances even further by publishing a step-by-step guide on how to sign up and ‘condemn Labour to years in the political wilderness’.

Although it’s unlikely the Guardian‘s condemnation of this will bother any partakers, there is another more practical snag voters will have to get past: Labour’s verification process. The party have issued a statement in light of the developments, claiming that these Tory jokers will not be able to infiltrate their system:

‘All Registered Supporters must be verified against the Electoral Register and will only receive a vote if they support the aims and values of the Labour Party.’

For those who do wish to give it a go, it’s best to refrain from saying – as the Telegraph suggests – that you are supporting Labour in order to ‘condemn Labour to years in the political wilderness’. You will also need to cleanse your social media of any other party affiliation, and brush up on your Labour knowledge as some applicants could be subjected to a short phone interview.

If you fail the test, your voting rights will disappear and the party will keep the mandatory £3 donation to the Labour Party, by way of an’ administrative fee’.

‘At this rate the Tories could become Labour’s new big donor,’ Mr S’s optimistic mole whispers.
