During the Labour leadership election, Jeremy Corbyn found himself in hot water after he appeared to claim in an interview with the Independent on Sunday that he wanted to reinstate clause IV of the Labour party constitution. The clause — which Tony Blair scrapped — commits the party to nationalising industry:
‘To secure for the workers by hand or by brain the full fruits of their industry and the most equitable distribution thereof that may be possible upon the basis of the common ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange, and the best obtainable system of popular administration and control of each industry or service.’
Corbyn’s apparent desire to bring it back angered many in Labour and his spokesman swiftly issued a denial, claiming that Corbyn did not want to bring back the clause.
So Mr S was surprised to learn that Clause IV is being given a special plug in a series of newly released limited edition Labour postcards. In the ‘iconic quotes’ postcard selection — a bargain at £9 — there is a special Clause IV postcard, as well as two postcards which include a photo of Corbyn along with a quote from the man himself:
It seems that now elected, Corbyn has less qualms about being associated with Clause IV.
