Jarrow: A police sergeant has been sacked after pleading guilty to using illegal steroids. He told the court that he had begun taking them in the 1990s as a form of contraceptive, and had returned to them in 2006, to help him in bodybuilding contests.
Hartlepool: A seal pup beached in the harbour was rescued after residents of waterside flats heard it whimpering through the night.
Halifax: A man who was on a conditional discharge for harassment has admitted calling a woman more than a hundred times in two hours. She had some belongings of his, including a Johnny Cash CD inherited from his father. He was found to have left 106 voicemail messages.
Newcastle upon Tyne: The last surviving pit pony from the Northumberland coalfield has died, aged 40, at Newcastle Cat and Dog Shelter.
