Unsurprisingly, the killing of Labour MP Jo Cox dominates the front pages this morning. The 41-year-old MP for Birstall died yesterday after being shot and stabbed in the street whilst out serving her constituents. Politicians from all parties have paid tribute to the mum-of-two since the dreadful attack. And today’s newspapers are also united in expressing the widespread shock and horror felt at the killing.
The Yorkshire Evening Post led with Jo Cox’s husband Brendan’s emotional tribute to his wife. In his statement, issued shortly after the tragic death was confirmed yesterday, Mr Cox pays tribute to his wife and says she would want only that her ‘precious children are bathed in love’ and that ‘we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her’.
The Daily Mail describe Jo Cox’s death as a ‘tragic waste’, saying the MP – who won election in 2015 – was a ‘devoted mum of two’ and a ‘dedicated public servant’:
The Guardian leads with Brendan Cox’s tribute to his wife, in which he describes how Jo ‘believed in a better world and she fought for it every day’:
The Sun repeats Jo’s husband’s ‘moving tribute’ as it describes how the Labour MP was ‘murdered in cold blood’:
The I‘s powerful front page says Jo was a mum and a ‘proud Yorkshire lass’. The paper says the MP was ‘shot dead while serving her people’:
The Times highlights security concerns which had apparently been raised in the run-up to yesterday’s events. The paper goes on to say that police had been reviewing Jo’s protection:
The Mirror follows the lead of a number of papers in quoting from Brendan Cox’s emotional tribute to his wife:
The Daily Telegraph says that yesterday’s events were a ‘dark day for democracy’:
The Daily Express describe how ‘Britain was in shock last night at the horrific murder of a woman MP’:
The Metro also leads its front page with yesterday’s tragic events. The paper describes how the mum of two’s attacker is believed to have shouted ‘Britain first’ during the attack:
