Phone hacking: today’s charges

The Crown Prosecution Service this morning charged eight suspects in relation to phone hacking. These suspects, including Rebekah Brooks Andy Coulson face a total of 19 charges, which I’ve set out below.

Rebekah Brooks, Andrew Coulson, Stuart Kuttner, Greg Miskiw, Ian Edmondson, Neville Thurlbeck and James Weatherup are all charged with conspiring to intercept the voicemail messages of well-known people and/or those associated with them without lawful authority from 3 October 2000 to 9 August 2006. Private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, who is the eighth person charged today, does not face this first charge for legal reasons, but four charges relating to Milly Dowler, Andrew Gilchrist, Delia Smith and Charles Clarke have been made against him today.

There are additional charges for the other seven suspects, which are as follows:

Andy Coulson, former News of the World editor and ex-Downing Street communications chief, faces four charges relating to the voicemails of:

– Milly Dowler
– David Blunkett
– Charles Clarke
– Calum Best

Stuart Kuttner, former News of the World managing editor, faces two charges relating to the voicemails of:

– Milly Dowler
– David Blunkett

Greg Miskiw, former News of the World news editor, faces nine charges relating to:

– Milly Dowler
– Sven-Goran Eriksson
– Abigail Titmus and John Leslie
– Andrew Gilchrist
– David Blunkett
– Delia Smith
– Charles Clarke
– Jude Law, Sadie Frost and Sienna Miller
– Wayne Rooney

Ian Edmondson, former News of the World assistant editor (news), faces 11 charges relating to the voicemails of:

– David Blunkett
– Charles Clarke
– Jude Law, Sadie Frost and Sienna Miller
– Mark Oaten
– Wayne Rooney
– Calum Best
– Tessa Jowell and David Mills
– Lord Prescott
– Professor John Tulloch
– Lord Frederick Windsor
– Paul McCartney and Heather Mills

Neville Thurlbeck, former News of the World chief reporter, will face seven charges relating to:

– Milly Dowler
– Sven-Goran Eriksson
– David Blunkett
– Charles Clarke
– Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
– Mark Oaten
– Tessa Jowell and David Mills

James Weatherup, former assistant news editor at the News of the World, will face seven charges in relation to:

– David Blunkett
– Charles Clarke
– Jude Law, Sadie Frost and Sienna Miller
– Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
– Wayne Rooney
– Lord Prescott
– Paul McCartney and Heather Mills

Three remaining suspects will not be charged because of insufficient evidence. The police have requested that the CPS defer its decision in relation to two suspects, who have not been named.
