It’s a day ending in ‘y’ which means there’s more bad news for the Scottish Nats. Now new polling for unionist group Scotland in Union shows that most Scots feel safer as part of the United Kingdom. The Survation survey revealed that most of Scotland’s population believe they are more secure – and have more influence – as part of the UK, with the country’s people also in favour of retaining the nuclear deterrent. For the anti-Trident, secessionist Nats, it’s quite the blow…
Today’s poll found half of participants believed Scotland is more secure as part of the UK, while almost six in ten respondents felt that the country should hold onto Trident. Only a third felt that the land of the brave would be safer as an independent nation and just a fifth thought the nuclear deterrent should be scrapped. On global alliances – from which Scotland would be removed post-independence – four in five Scots insisted Nato membership was important, three-quarters valued being part of the G7 and the same proportion were in favour of UN Security Council membership. It’s hardly what the Nats will want to hear. Talk about being out of touch with public opinion, eh?
Support for the SNP has risen in recent months – in part due to growing frustration with Sir Keir Starmer's Labour lot – though rather curiously the party has not been all that vocal about independence. While First Minister John Swinney still insists he wants to 'finish the task' of separating Scotland from the UK, Scotland in Union chair Alastair Cameron remarked about today's polling:
Current global tensions and uncertainties reinforce how important the UK’s strength and influence is for people in Scotland. As part of the UK, we have a seat at the top table, and international influence which a separate Scotland would lack. This poll shows that most Scots value the benefit of being part of the UK. It’s time the SNP listened to the majority of Scots and stopped its damaging campaign to break up the UK.
That's those pesky Nats told, eh?
