Protesters to serve up anti-Tory cake at party conference

The Great British Bake Off has been praised for getting the nation cooking. Now, it seems the fever has become political, as anti-austerity campaigners get baking ahead of this year’s party conference in Manchester.

Activists have been tasked with baking their best anti-Tory cakes for a picnic due to be held as part of the action against the Tory conference. But rather than a poisoned creation for a Conservative politician of choice, the winning entry will be fed to the homeless. The lucky winner will be given a ticket to ‘Laugh Them Out Of Town’, a comedy event taking place during conference featuring Frankie Boyle and the Thick of It‘s Sara Pascoe, which hopes to use jokes to drive the Tories out of town.

There are also plans to purchase thousands of bouquets of flowers to decorate the conference centre. However, instead of a tribute to the politicians, these will be to remember those who have lost their lives as a result of the welfare cuts.

Still, Mr S suspects that the most devastating of all the left’s efforts may come in the shape of a street protest, which hopes to turn the surrounding area into a version of the Notting Hill carnival:

Since wealthy W11 residents — who have included David Cameron, George Osborne, Michael Gove and Ed Vaizey — tend to board up their million pound homes and head to the countryside to escape the street festival — along with its mix of music and crime — this is likely to hit the Tories the hardest.

Along with Charlotte Church staging a protest, it’s hardly the welcome George Osborne would have hoped from a city central to his Northern Powerhouse.

Note: If you don’t fancy the Bake Off, The Spectator has a number of events on during the Tory party conference.
