Shelf Life: Freddie Fox

Not only will you be able to catch Freddie Fox this month in the BBC’s mega drama Parade’s End (also starring Rebecca Hall and Benedict Cumberbatch) but you can also see him live at the Hampstead Theatre when he appears in David Hare’s  The Judas Kiss with Rupert Everett as Oscar Wilde. His current reading shows he’s been doing his research diligently.

1). What are you reading at the moment?

My Friendship With Oscar Wilde by Alfred Douglas.

2). As a child, what did you read under the covers?

I read very little as a child owing to severe dyslexia. I was scared to read. So I listened either to audiobooks (The Thorn Ogres of Hagwood read by Geoffrey Palmer I remember very specifically) or Dad would read to me (usually the classics like Robin Hood or Robinson Crusoe to send me to sleep.)

3) Has a book ever made you cry, and if so which one?

The Old Man and The Sea

4) You are about to be put into solitary confinement for a year and allowed to take three books. What would you choose?

De Profundis by Oscar Wilde

5) Which literary character would you most like to sleep with?

Milady de Winter

6) If you could write a self-help book, what would you call it?

Darling, you are simply marvellous!

7) Michael Gove has asked you to rewrite the GCSE English Literature syllabus. Which book, which play, and which poem would you make compulsory reading?

I don’t agree with the idea of making any book or poem or play compulsory reading for children. I believe there should be a choice and that they should choose what takes their interest, but if I has to say one (that I think encompasses all three categories) it would be The Odyssey by Homer.

8) Which party from literature would you most like to have attended?

Champagne at Ma Mayfield’s with Sebastian and Charles from Brideshead Revisited.

9) What would you title your memoirs?

I won’t write any.

10) Which literary character do you dream of playing?

Harry Flashman.

11) What book would you give to a lover?

A volume of Pablo Neruda poems.

12) Spying Mein Kampf or Dan Brown on someone’s bookshelf can spell havoc for a friendship. What’s your literary dealbreaker?

50 Shades Of (f*#@ing) Grey.

Freddie Fox will be starring in The Judas Kiss at The Hampstead Theatre from the 6th September to 13th October.
