Starmer apologises over banned TikTok dance

Of all the things the public might think Prime Minister Keir Starmer should apologise for, a TikTok dance is probably not top of the list. Yet that is exactly what the Labour leader has expressed regret over, after a visit to a primary school on Monday. The PM found himself being dressed down by the headmistress of Welland Academy in Peterborough, after he engaged in a banned social media dance that has caused both parents and teachers no end of irritation. Not like Starmer to be unhelpful, eh?

Sir Keir visited the school with his Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson in tow to promote the government’s expansion of free school meals. But the PM’s fatal error was made during a reading session, after a young girl sitting next to Starmer laughingly told him they were reading page ‘six seven’. Social media savvy as he is, the Prime Minister grinned back before joining her in juggling his hands. Mischievous glances were exchanged across the room as other youngsters joined in – before the whole class erupted in hysterics. A less-than-delighted teacher groaned to Starmer: ‘We are not over that yet, the six-seven, it’s still very much a thing.’

But that wasn’t his only reprimand. After Sir Keir informed headmistress Jo Anderson that it had been a ‘bit wild’ in the class, she responded: ‘You know children get in trouble for saying that in our school.’ The PM apologised before pointing the blame at, er, the children. ‘I didn’t start it, Miss!’ he insisted. It’s one of the few times the PM might be able to get away with that…
