Uh oh. Labour’s first six months in government haven’t gone quite as swimmingly as Sir Keir Starmer might have hoped and poll after poll has reflected the growing dissatisfaction with the incumbent government. The latest data dump– by pollsters More in Common – now reveals that the Conservatives are leading Labour by a point, with a quarter of Brits backing Kemi Badenoch’s boys in blue. How very interesting.
The voting intention survey shows the Tories leading Labour by a point, while Starmer's army is tied on 24 per cent with Nigel Farage's Reform UK. The results of this latest canvassing, which was carried out between the 10-13 January, follows yesterday's news that Farage's Reform lot are neck and neck with the Starmtroopers – after support for Sir Keir's crowd fell by nine points while Nige saw his party gain ten points in YouGov's poll. Talk about close competition, eh?
Not that it's all good news for Badenoch who, according to this particular poll, has seen her popularity fall faster than Starmer's. The Tory leader's ratings have plummeted by 15 points since she became leader – while Sir Keir's score has fallen by 14 points over the same time. It's certainly something to keep an eye on…
And more detailed questions on the performance of Starmer's government paint a rather dismal picture for Sir Keir. Two-thirds of respondents say that, with regards to how Labour's 'change' agenda is going, the new government 'feels like more of the same'. In a further blow to the reds, 70 per cent of Brits feel like things in the UK today are only 'getting worse'. Ouch.
If this is how the country feels just six months in, however will things look after five years?
