Tory councillor’s wife jailed over social media riot post

The wife of a Tory councillor has been jailed for 31 months over a social media post during the riots. Lucy Connolly, married to Raymond Connolly on the West Northamptonshire Council, took to social media in July with some rather controversial words in the wake of the killing of three children in Southport.

In her Twitter tirade, Connolly called for ‘mass deportation now’, adding:

Set fire to all the f***ing hotels full of the b******s for all I care. While you’re at it take the treacherous government and politicians with them.

Good heavens. The wife of the Tory councillor previously admitted to intending to stir up racial hatred, and was sentenced today at Birmingham Crown Court. The court heard that the councillor’s wife sent a WhatsApp message some days later laughing that her social media post had ‘bitten me on the a***’. She can say that again…

The messages were sent after rioters attempted to set fire to two separate hotels housing asylum seekers. Over 100 people were handed jail sentences after taking part in the rioting that rocked Britain after the horrific murders, with the BBC reporting that more than 30 people were arrested over social media posts with at least 17 charged. Talk about a crackdown, eh?

Polling by YouGov suggests that two thirds of Brits believe social media companies should be held responsible for their platforms being used to encourage violence. Yet not everyone is thrilled by the idea of people being sent to prison over social media posts – particularly after Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour government released a whole horde of prisoners early to free up jail spaces. Reform leader Nigel Farage took Sir Keir to task on the matter last month, quizzing the PM: ‘Does the Prime Minister understand that there is a growing feeling of anger in this country that we are living through two-tier policing and a two-tier justice system?’ Ouch. And judging by the reaction on social media to this development, the ‘Two Tier Keir’ nickname looks like it’s here to stay.
