Lucky Lord Adonis has spent the last few days travelling around London by bus as part of his ‘London By Bus’ campaign. He’s been chatting to commuters and sharing interesting facts like bus route 25 carries 64,000 passengers a day which is equivalent to the population of Crewe. As the picture above shows, he’s setting the town on fire.
Now, I’m sure that his lordship takes his role as Shadow Infrastructure Minister very seriously (who wouldn’t); but is there more at play here? The sheer volume of pictures of him meeting concerned parties and pointing at various things might indicate the imminent launch of an election campaign.
Mr S has noted Adonis’s interest in City Hall before – and, with his transport expertise, he would be a fascinating candidate. But, as I said over Christmas: ‘His ghostly pallor, baldness and arachnid frame do not exactly scream of electability’. Maybe the lanky lord realises this; as he put it to my colleague Sebastian Payne at the end of last year: ‘All I’m doing is contributing to a debate on the policies we are going to need post-Boris.’ That is hardly a call to arms.
But, then again, perhaps Lord Adonis has another job in mind? It has not gone unnoticed, to Mr Steerpike at least, that the role of head of Transport for London will soon be up for grabs. What more could a transport wonk want than a train set with a £9bn budget?
