It’s a big day for Reform UK as Nigel Farage hosts his first campaign event down in Dover. But prior to his speech this morning, the former Brexit MEP decided to kick things off by throwing the gauntlet down to Rishi Sunak. In his Daily Telegraph column today, Farage challenges the beleaguered premier to have a one-to-one debate on Channel crossings. The honorary president of Reform says that if Sunak refuses to debate him on this ‘national security emergency’, it will prove that he ‘can’t stop the boats’. According to Farage:
The Channel crossings must be designated a national security emergency. For two years, we have been promised a Rwanda plan and a solution. Despite a bill of £140 million, not one person has been forced to go. It looks like immigration, legal and illegal, will dominate this general election campaign. The main reason for this snap election is because Sunak knew that his promise that the plan. Our Prime Minister appears to be keen to engage in many televised election debates, and I challenge him to debate with me on this issue. If he refuses, that will confirm the fact that Sunak can’t stop the boats.
If Sunak can demand six debates with Starmer, will he submit to just one with Farage? The answer seems to be, er, no. A Conservative party source told the Telegraph that Sunak would turn down the invitation because he would prefer to debate Sir Keir on border controls instead. They added that: ‘A vote for Reform is a vote for Labour.’ Get ready to hear that one a lot over the next five weeks….
