Oh dear. It seems that another major broadcaster has slipped up in their coverage of Israel and Palestine. This time it is ITV News, which this week featured in a segment ‘a British Palestinian woman living in London’ called Latifa Abouchakra. She was invited on to talk about the Islamophobic abuse she has received in recent weeks, explaining how:
I’ve been called a terrorist, I’ve been asked to go back home, I’ve had people in their cars making threatening gestures… it makes me feel as a Muslim woman in this country, that no matter how hard I work, no matter how good I can be, it will never be enough because appearently Mulims and Palestinians are inherently terrorists according to the system here, according to the narrative of the media here.
So who is Latifa Abouchakra? As a quick internet search would reveal, she is a reporter for Palestine Declassified, a show produced by Press TV, the state channel of the Iranian regime. In the words of the Board of Deputies, ‘this show regularly targets British Jews for attack and censure.’ Press TV has previously had its broadcasting licence removed by Ofcom.
Abouchakra recently appeared in a video on the Palestine Declassified Twitter account which described the events of the 7/10 attack by Hamas that left 1,400 Israelis dead as follows:
As fragile as a spider’s web. The Zionist entity is shaking with fear; in an early morning shock, Palestinian resistance factions from Gaza launched an unprecedented three-pronged attack on the entity… what ensued was the homecoming of at least 1,000 Palestinians from the resistance factions into the fragile Zionist entity… over 100 settlers have been taken as prisoners of war by the resistance – the vast majority are members of the Occupation Forces.
Is Abouchakra really the only person whom ITV could find to speak for British Muslims? A literal propagandist for the Iranian regime? Talk about a failure of journalistic standards by ITV…
