Clinton on Corbyn: ‘the maddest person in the room’

Although Jeremy Corbyn’s brother Piers is rooting for Donald Trump tonight, it’s widely thought that — out of the two — the Labour leader is Team Hillary. Alas in the event of a Hillary Clinton presidency, the future for UK Labour and the US doesn’t look so bright.

Wikileaks have leaked a transcript of a speech by Bill Clinton in which the former American president takes aim at Corbyn. In the aftermath of Ed Miliband’s general election defeat, Hillary’s husband says Labour ‘practically got a guy off the street’ to replace him.

‘If you look all over the world – the British Labour Party disposed of its most [inaudible] leader, David Miliband, because they were mad at him for being part of Tony Blair’s government in the Iraq War.

And they moved to the left and put his brother in as leader because the British labour movement wanted it. When David Cameron thumped him in the election, they reached the interesting conclusion that they lost because they hadn’t moved far left enough, and so they went out and practically got a guy off the street to be the leader of the British Labour party.’

Clinton goes on to say that Corbyn was just the result of party members wanting ‘the maddest person in the room to represent them’. However, Labour sources have suggested Bill meant the ‘angriest’ person — rather than the closest to insanity.

If Hillary does win tonight, perhaps this will be enough to convince Labour’s prince across the water David Miliband — and Hillary’s golden boy — to return to UK politics.
