Another day with more Starmer drama. Sir Keir yesterday told a press conference that Jeremy Corbyn will be barred from standing as a Labour candidate at the next election, a decision that hasn’t gone down very well with the magic Grandpa. Corbyn has now released an angry statement, accusing the man who replaced him as Labour leader of a ‘flagrant attack’ on democracy. In a lengthy statement on Twitter, he declared that:
Any attempt to block my candidacy is a denial of due process, and should be opposed by anybody who believes in the value of democracy. At a time when the government is overseeing the worst cost of living crisis in a generation, this is a divisive distraction from our overriding goal: to defeat the Conservative party at the next general election.
Has it occurred to Jezza that, er, his presence in parliament might actually be an impediment to that same ‘overriding goal’? Regardless of what Sir Keir does, Corbyn still reportedly intends to put himself forward for selection in his constituency Labour party in Islington North, where he still retains a solid support base. That would mean the party’s governing national executive would need to formally block him from progressing as a candidate.
According to the Guardian, Corbyn’s supporters have undertaken research in the seat in recent months that suggests he has a possibility of winning as an independent and commands a ‘personal vote seven times higher than the average constituency MP’. Corbyn is said to be determined to first pursue the Labour nomination from the local party. Get the popcorn in…
Some in Islington fear Jezza facing a rival Labour candidate in the seat and splitting the left-wing vote. How ironic if the only Tory gain of election night 2024 came thanks to Corbyn…
