Welcome to The Spectator’s US Election 2016 site, brought to you in association with City Index. This will be home to the best British coverage of the biggest, maddest and baddest political event of the year.
There has been no shortage of British coverage of the race to the White House in recent months; the world is gripped by the Donald Trump phenomenon. What’s been lacking, however, is shrewd, detailed analysis of what is actually happening in the American body politic — apart from, that is, on the pages on The Spectator. We’ve been the only British magazine to cover both Trump and Clinton intelligently and humorously.
As far back as August last year, Paul Wood wrote in the magazine that ‘The Donald has tapped into a deep well of anger about Washington, distrust of conventional politicians, and fear about the future. His poll lead seems incredibly durable.’ Then in January, we ran a ‘Trump. Seriously’ cover, when the vast majority of transatlantic commentators still thought it impossible that the Donald could become the Republican nominee. After Trump lost the Iowa primary in February and most pundits wrote him off, we published ‘Sorry, the Donald isn’t dead yet’. We’ve explored the deeper causes behind Trump’s ascendancy, and the intricacies of Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, through writers such as Christopher Buckley, Christopher Caldwell, David Frum, W. James Antle III, Daniel McCarthy, Jacob Heilbrunn, Tim Montgomerie, and others.
Over the next few months – both before and after the election on 8 November – we’ll bring you more brilliant American commentary and the best US electoral analysts. The new weekly Americano podcast will also bring together commentators from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the stories making the headlines. So buckle up, and enjoy.
