When it rains for the Labour lot, it pours. Today’s YouGov poll for the Times shows Nigel Farage’s Reform UK with a ten point lead on the current party of government, with Labour tied with the Tories. More than that, the survey of 2,400 adults found that half of all those who supported Sir Keir Starmer’s army at the last election have since turned their backs on the reds. It’s yet another blow for Sir Keir – and his Chancellor hasn’t even announced her budget yet!
The polling, carried out on 26 and 27 October, shows that almost a third of Britons would back Reform if a general election were held today. Only 17 per cent would vote for Labour – the lowest level of support for the party that YouGov has recorded. The Conservatives would also see support from just 17 per cent of Brits – although this is consistent with the results of a number of recent polls.
Zack Polanski's Green party will be delighted to see that 16 per cent of British adults would back them in a general election, with the environmentalists leapfrogging the Liberal Democrats, on 15 per cent. And, notably, the data reveals that Labour, the Tories, the Lib Dems and the Greens are all polling within three points of each other. There are no dull days in politics, eh?
The new poll has alarmed Labour figures who are busy trying to brace themselves for the reaction to Rachel Reeves's autumn budget, which will be announced on 26 November. The government is still reeling from last week's news that a migrant guilty of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old had been accidentally freed from prison (he has now been caught) and Britain's grooming gang inquiry remains in chaos. Things can only get wetter…
