Another day, another drama. This time it’s in Suffolk, where former prime minister Liz Truss appeared on Tuesday night at a promotional event to flog her new book ‘Ten Years to Save the West’. But while the ex-PM was deep in conversation about US politics and Donald Trump, she was oblivious to a banner descending slowly above her head. Bearing the image of a goggly-eyed lettuce – in reference to the Daily Star‘s unofficial countdown about whether the legume would outlast the then-PM – the poster was emblazoned with the words: ‘I crashed the economy’. Safe to say the former prime minister was less than impressed. After it was drawn to her attention, Truss announced ‘that’s not funny’, before picking up her notes and storming off stage. She certainly knows how to make an exit…
The former MP for South West Norfolk has now taken to Twitter to hit back further at the interruption, which has been claimed by activist group Led By Donkeys. ‘What happened last night was not funny,’ she reiterated, going on to fume:
Far-left activists disrupted the event, which then had to be stopped for security reasons. This is done to intimidate people and suppress free speech. I won’t stand for it. Would we see the same reaction if the activists were far-right?
Strong stuff – although Mr S isn’t entirely convinced that a picture of a lettuce is, er, all that intimidating. Indeed Truss has not garnered much sympathy from her followers on social media so far. Her latest post comes a day after the ex-PM took to the platform to slam ‘the attacks on free speech in Britain and Europe’ and hail Elon Musk ‘for standing up to these bullies’ – and just four days after the tech billionaire dubbed her ‘Liz “Lettuce” Truss’ himself. Ouch. It doesn’t seem like she’ll be shaking off that comparison any time soon…
