Matt Hancock starts his jungle jamboree

Credit: ITV

‘Mr Hancock, I presume?’ was the reaction our former Health Secretary presumably hoped to elicit upon entering the jungle last night. Unfortunately, it was a wall of hysterical laughter which met him instead as comedian Seann Walsh as the comedian doubled up in hysterics at the sight of Hancock tottering his way across the rope bridge and down the steps to meet him.

Early polling shows most of the public are eagerly awaiting Hancock’s elimination – and it seems the stars of I’m a Celebrity share in that contempt. Charlene White of Loose Women spoke for many when she asked ‘Why are you here?’ with Hancock’s mumbled excuse that ‘there are so few ways in which politicians can show that we are human beings’ prompting a withering look from White.

Radio DJ Chris Moyles mocked Hancock for his role in the pandemic, ordering him to say ‘Next slide please’. After the hapless Hancock gamely played along, Culture Club frontman Boy George told him: ‘You’re really going to get it. You’re really going to get it.’ He later said he ‘could have walked out’ when Hancock arrived because his mother was hospitalised with Covid during the pandemic. Imagine losing the moral high ground to a man who was imprisoned for beating a male escort with a metal chain and chaining him to his radiator. Only our Matt, eh?

Let’s hope that Tarzan fares better tonight with his hearts and minds mission…
