As Jeremy Corbyn edges closer to victory in the Labour leadership race, his critics grow more vocal with both Tony Blair and John McTernan attempting to thwart his campaign this week.
However, for all the naysayers, Corbyn is at least managing to slowly amass a celebrity fan club. After Steerpike reported that the Silk actress Maxine Peake had got behind the Corbyn campaign, classical singer turned ‘prosecco socialist’ Charlotte Church has voiced her support for the leadership hopeful.
Church – who attended the VIP area of an anti austerity march with Russell Brand after the election – has written a blog in support of Corbyn. Eloquently titled ‘T-O-N-Y! You Ain’t Got No Alibi! YOU TORY!, Church blasts Blair for his speech this week warning Labour supporters not to back Corbyn:
‘Let us not forget that there is a wide consensus that this man should be tried for war crimes, and yet he has the gall to tell others to get a “heart transplant”.’
As for Corbyn, she insists he is the man for the job:
‘There is something inherently virtuous about him, and that is a quality that can rally the support of a lot of people, and most importantly, a lot of young people.’
She also warns that those who scoff at him only make him seem more appealing to the left:
‘The more Jeremy Corbyn is held cheap by the establishment, the more he begins to look like an intriguing outsider, relatable, and unfazed with the squabbling in the political playground.’
If Church is right, today’s splashes in the Sunday papers – which include reports that Harrier Harman has been advised to postpone the leadership vote to stop the hard left infiltrating – will only improve support for the man most likely to be the next leader of the Labour Party.
