This might seem impossible, but the row between Vote Leave and Labour leave has become even more complicated. This afternoon, Labour donor John Mills, who remains on the Vote Leave campaign, has put out this statement:
‘I am the founder and co-owner of Labour Leave. A statement has been put out by someone called Richard Hillgrove purporting to be from Brendan Chilton, General Secretary of Labour Leave. That statement is fraudulent. Richard Hillgrove has no position in Labour Leave. Labour Leave is an independent campaign but corporately it supports Vote Leave.’
But Kate Hoey, who is co-chair of Labour leave, says that this is the official statement from the group, and it has Chilton’s name next to Hoey’s at the bottom of it:
‘Labour Leave will now be independent of Vote Leave and has told the Electoral Commission that we do not endorse Vote Leave for designation.
‘Our campaign to encourage Labour supporters to reject the EU is already succeeding – as today’s YouGov Poll shows.
‘We are in the middle of distributing 1 million Labour Leave leaflets during February highlighting the waste of the £50m we give Brussels every single day. We encourage every politician who wants to reconnect with voters to campaign to leave the EU and join in across the country at the grassroots with all who share our desire to leave this anti democratic body.’
Hoey insists that Labour Leave is leaving Vote Leave. So it’s either the case that Labourites have left Labour Leave to stay on Vote Leave while Labour Leave has left Vote Leave. Or Labourites are leaving Labour Leave so that they can leave Vote Leave.
All very clear then.
