Tories’ ‘ludicrous’ phone bank email falls flat with voters

As CCHQ try to gather momentum behind Zac Goldsmith’s mayoral campaign, they are hoping that they can count on Tory supporters to do their bit. On top of leafleting, voters are being invited to take part in phone bank sessions at the Connect call centre.

In the event that this alone would not be enough to entice would-be volunteers, they have a ‘voter communications intern’ sending out messages to increase attendance at the sessions. Alas word reaches Steerpike that the tone of the emails coming from ‘voter communications’ is going down like a lead balloon with a number of well-heeled supporters.

A recent email from the intern about a recent caller connect session has been doing the rounds. In this, the sender tells voters: ‘if you didn’t make it to the call centre this week, you’re going to kick yourself!’. The intern goes on to claim that they ‘pretty much had the whole Cabinet in CCHQ’:

‘To xxxxx

If you didn’t make it to the call centre this week, you’re going to kick yourself!

There was a special surprise in store for our unsuspecting callers…

We had the mother of all sessions…

We pretty much had the whole Cabinet at CCHQ… No, I’m not having you on!

The PM, Boris, Zac, Theresa May and others were on the phones, side by side with our amazing activists.

I think that’s going down in Connect call centre history!

Who knows who’ll be here next?!

There’s plenty going on and we’ll be in touch with more details next week.

But for now sign up to one of our sessions before it’s too late!’

The sender may need to take a refresher course in basic arithmetic. If David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Zac Goldsmith and Theresa May all attended the phone-in, that makes two Cabinet members. As for the ‘others’ referenced, Mr S so far counts four more Cabinet members — out of a possible 22.

‘We are not 6-year-olds who might be impressed by ludicrous language and superfluous exclamation marks,’ one put-out supporter grumbles. ‘I am truly appalled by every aspect of this email.’
