Counting is nearly complete across England and Wales and the picture in the local elections is clear: Tory losses and a red wave. Thursday saw 103 English councils go to the polls with ten mayoral races and dozens of police and crime commissioner positions up for grabs too. The by-election in Blackpool saw a huge swing to Labour but the real story of the night is Reform coming within 100 votes of the Conservatives. Here’s the national picture so far:
It's notoriously difficult to extrapolate a national result from local elections but Professor John Curtice has had a go for the BBC. They estimate that had the whole country gone to the polls Labour would win with a nine point margin. That's a record equalling low for the Tories but with Labour not extending their lead on a year ago.

There was a by-election in Blackpool South on Thursday too. Labour's Pat McFadden, the party's National Campaign Coordinator said it was the first result Labour were looking for because it was 'the only result where Rishi Sunak and the government are really on the ballot paper'. Gaining this seat would 'show real progress on the way to the coming general election', he said. The result certainly didn't disappoint for Labour who won the seat with 59 per cent of the vote and overturned what had been a small Tory majority of 3,690. That translates to an absolutely huge swing of 26 per cent. It's also the eleventh by-election defeat for the government since the last general election.
The other story from Blackpool was how close Reform came to beating the Tories into second place. Until now, it remains to be seen whether or not the polling success of Richard Tice's Reform party will translate into gains at the ballot box. They missed out on their second place goal by just 100 votes, as Katy Balls reports. That could be the best bit of news for the Tories from the whole night.
It wasn't all good news for Keir Starmer and Labour though. Early results suggest a Gaza backlash with councils Labour had hoped to win, such as Bolton, remaining under no overall control. In the borough, Labour lost the ward of Rumworth – which is two thirds Muslim – to an independent candidate who claimed the win 'for Gaza'. Halliwell ward (54 per cent Muslim) also changed hands from Labour to the Greens, giving Bolton their first Green party councillor.
Another story emerging from the overnight results is the collapse of the red wall. Labour are having their best results in areas of the country that voted most strongly for Brexit, whilst the Tories are having their worst results in those same areas.
There's lots more counting to come so check back here over the next few hours and days for the latest results.
