On election night, Al Murray will not be in South Thanet as is the usual custom among candidate hopefuls. Instead, the 46-year-old comedian will be performing a gig in Dartford.
Despite launching his campaign last week to run as a Free United Kingdom Party candidate in the same constituency Nigel Farage is vying for, Murray’s comedy tour means he will be nowhere to be seen for the bulk of the night, though it’s thought he will head there after his show.
The Orchard Theatre’s marketing manager Michelle May has confirmed that Murray is to go ahead with the gig. ‘Al is 100 per cent committed to his spring One Man, One Guvnor Tour and will be going ahead with the Dartford show on May 7 and will travel onto South Thanet after,’ May says.
The good people of South Thanet, however, ought not to expect to see much of Murray in the build up to polling day either. On the eve of the election the Pub Landlord will be in Bristol, and the day after the vote he will be either be commiserating or celebrating at his gig in Dorking.
That’s presuming the FUKP party even get the green light from the electoral commission. They are currently processing an application but this can take up to 30 days to clear and if the name is deemed too similar to Ukip it could be rejected.
Murray has odds of 66/1 to win the seat, though it’s clear he hasn’t been taking his manifesto too seriously. In a Guardian Q&A yesterday, he reveleaed his policy on pies.
‘Lids do not a pie make. I expect this is something to do with Brussels, and even if it isn’t, I shall decry it thusly,’ he mused. ‘What I like about this though is that unlike, say, the Dangerous Dogs Act, this is a law we can easily define, enact and act upon.’
