A testy PMQs today with Miliband trying to pin Cameron down on the specific question of
whether the NHS is now subject to EU competition law, and Cameron responding by dubbing Miliband ‘son of roadblock’. The exchange revealed that although Cameron is not a details man,
something that will cause him problems in time, he still has enough presence in the chamber to withstand tricky moments. But I suspect that Labour will be happy if Miliband’s parting shot of
‘you can’t trust the Tories on the NHS’ makes it into the news bulletins this evening.
There were, as there so often are these days, a couple of questions from Tories on AV — including one delicious one from Bernard Jenkin which revealed that Ben Bradshaw, the chairman of Labour Yes to AV, used to think that it was a very poor system. But, in contrast to last week, Cameron didn’t bash AV too hard. Instead, he said ‘we should have this argument out in the country’, which must have come as a relief to Clegg, who didn’t enjoy sitting next to Cameron last week as he laid into AV.
I suspect the real news of the day is that Cameron hasn’t spoken to Obama about Libya this week, despite Britain having laid down, along with France and Lebanon, a security council resolution it . This shows just how strained relations are between Downing Street and the White House.
