Given that Ivan Massow failed to be picked as one of the four final candidates in the race to be the Conservative candidate for London mayor despite a flashy campaign, it’s safe to say that Massow still has some work to do when it comes to mastering how to succeed in politics.
So Mr S was surprised to hear that the business mogul is now assisting Zac Goldsmith with his campaign. Speaking at Josh Spero’s Second Hand Stories book launch party at Bonhams, Massow said he was working with the Conservative mayoral candidate when it came to the policy side of things:
‘I’m working with Zac. I speak to him a lot but you know it’s hard to get him to return anything. London’s in for a treat! I deal with the people on the policy side.’
Alas there already appears to be trouble in paradise, with Massow saying that while he speaks to him ‘a lot now’, he often leaves answer-phone messages and receives no response. Could another man be to blame?
‘He just wants to speak to that guy, whatever his name is… the Australian guy… Lynton Crosby. So he’s lining up those ducks and doesn’t really want to talk about other things. He wants the big plan in place and he’s waiting to be told what to drop and when.’
Somehow Mr S suspects that by the time that ‘Australian guy’ — also known as David Cameron’s election guru — is done assisting Goldsmith, Massow’s role may have diminished. After all, Massow displayed some difficulty grasping his own policies during his doomed mayoral campaign. During an interview with LBC, Massow spoke of the importance of more employers adopting the London living wage, only to be told by his interviewer that he had advertised for a campaign assistant at £6.50 per hour, far below the £9.15 London living wage.
